What’s the difference between appliance hose types?
Each appliance that uses water can have a different type of hose. Common types of hoses for refrigerators/ice makers include copper, PVC/plastic and braided stainless steel tubing. Copper works well but has a tendency to kink easily. This has the potential to cause water blockage. PVC/Plastic will not kink like copper however some have reported odd smell or taste from their water. Another issue is that PVC/Plastic tubing is not very strong and can cut easily. Braided stainless steel tubing is strong and very durable. It will not kink and is not easy to cut.
Washing machine tubing could be reinforced rubber and stainless steel braided. The reinforced rubber hosing is not recommended for indoor washing machines as they are the most likely to burst. The steel braided encases the rubber hose which provides a burst-resistant measure. These hoses have a very low failure rate when installed properly. You should note that if the hose is installed in a tight space it could become kinked or bent. If you need to use a hose in a tight space you should look for one that has an elbow.
How often should appliance hoses be replaced?
Hose replacement is all set by the appliance manufacturer. If you are unsure you can check the appliance’s owner manual or check with the manufacturer directly. The very minimum each hose should be inspected 1-2 times a year to ensure no kinks exists in the line and all connections are tight.
